My car is designed for 98 octane (RON) fuel:

However, it lives in a country where the only choices at the pump are green nozzle or black nozzle, and the green one’s 95 (the black is diesel, in case you’re wondering).

I spent ten days in France recently so I took the opportunity of treating it to 98, at a cost: it’s about 10c a litre dearer. No, I didn’t buy at this exorbitant autoroute price. Gasoil is diesel, for reasons unclear .

I came home with a few litres left and so I was able to experiment with 98 on familiar roads. The outcome? There’s noticeably more go on the dear stuff, with the turbo doing its boosty thing to more effect.

So there we have it. Using 95 in a vehicle designed for 98 does make a difference.

Some cars detect the octane levels and retard the timing to prevent pre- ignition. This also affects performance.

It’s neat that the difference is noticeable.

Oh for sure. My 4.7L HO is “premium recommended for maximum performance,” which I usually do, but sometimes I just don’t feel like paying for it and put in mid-grade instead, and I can tell a slight reduction in performance.

I think man y have knock sensors to sense minor detonation (from lower octane fuel) and then pull back timing to correct which accounts for the power loss. Not sure if the cars have actual octane sensors. I think many cars have flexfuel sensors and can adjust for ethanol content which is different but its a fun fact. It also lets me continue the internet gossip about how Koenigsegg is s omehow connected to that sensors development . I’m not really sure, some think his company assisted with development or holds some patents.  Would love to know more if anyone has more info.

It’s on the sign. 95 octane E10 (10% ethanol) , 98 octane, some kind of fancy diesel and ordinary diesel. “ SP” and “ sans plomb” are unleaded.

I hadn’t noticed, prices usually end in 9 here and in France. It’s possible that the numbers are 9s and that part of them isn’t showing up - LEDs don’t show up properly on a picture because they flash rapidly and you can catch them between flashes.

I didn’t actually try either, but Pomme de Pain are a fairly standard coffee/pastry/sandwich outlet.

Carrefour express is a chain of shops.

My Miata says “91 recommended” (AKI which is 95 RON) but it definitely does not run right if I use regular/ 87 (91 RON). Power is lower, gas mileage is abysmal, and I can get knock if I try hard enough. I am guessing 98 RON is more like our 93. I definitely never noticed a difference between 91/92/93. Only have 91 now in California so I dont have a choice anyways.

what’s ultimate diesel?

Also I have a funny octane related story that happened last week. As you know places at high elevation sell lesser octane than at low elevations for the reason that less protection from detonation is needed generally with a death of oxygen to combust (even turbo’s experience this to a degree).

In Utah, 85 (r+m/2) is the norm. I was filling up in Bluff UT , a tiny little burg in the middle of nowhere, and unsolicited from some guy: “can you believe this crap?!”

*looks around then back at pump*

“85! 85! octane! This is junk!”

“oh...yeah I guess.”

“I got a check engine light on my truck [f150 ecoboost] and it cost me $100 diagnostic fee to find out its bad gas!”

*looks around to notion where he is*

*Looks at pump where 88 and 91 are also available for no more money than anywhere else*

“I’m pulling my 30 foot trailer and my wrench comes on and turns out its bad gas!”

Here is what the F150 user manual has to say

*Your vehicle is designed to operate on regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87 or regular unleaded gasoline blended with a maximum of 85% ethanol (E85). Some fuel stations, particularly those in high altitude areas, offer fuels posted as regular unleaded gasoline with an octane rating below 87. The use of these fuels could result in engine damage that will not be covered by the vehicle warranty. For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather as well as other conditions, for example when towing a trailer. See Towing (page 285)*

AKI and RON are generally 3-5 points apart depending on blend; but there’s no “straight” conversion.  if a blend gets a lower MON then they’ll be further apart.

Basically, it’s diesel with an additive that is said to mitigate soot and other fuel system deposits and to improve storage life. Another name for it here is Premium Diesel.

There’s no performance benefit but I have heard it said that this you beaut diesel gives less issues with DPF equipped engines in urban environments.

We just use plain old truck diesel.

My RDX requires 91 (says required, not recommended), but the newer ones recommend it only. We’ve seen some customers complaining about a drop in fuel economy, just to find out t ha t they ran 87 octane. No matter how you approach it, you can’t explain why the car gets worse fuel economy on 87 to these people. I also find it funny they can afford a $50,000 plus dollar car but not the extra $0.20 cents a liter.

It’s probably down to tax. We used to have 97 or 98 octane fuel but the government of the day were concerned about the additives used to increase the octane and they taxed it out of existence. The French weren’t so fussy but I doubt if it’s a big seller there.

Bear in mind that the first price is €1.73, not €0 .73. LED displays don’t photograph well.

It’s all Greek to me, but the maximum octane readily available in the US is 93, and at a fairly significant premium.

Ah, but different ways of measuring octane. 98 RON (the system most of us use) is about 93 MKI (the sys tem the Americans use).
